Jackson
Pascagoula is a city, seat of Jackson County, southeastern Mississippi, a port at the mouth of the Pascagoula River on Mississippi Sound; incorporated 1904. Major manufactures include paper, petroleum products, clothing, processed food, chemicals, and building materials. Shipbuilding, commercial fishing, and tourism are also important to the economy. The original settlement developed around the still existent "Old Spanish Fort," built in 1718. The name possibly derives from a Native American term meaning "bread eaters.
